Okay, all you crazy kids. 2012 is off to a good start. We’ve been having a good turnout to Sunday practices with numbers regularly exceeding 20. That makes for some good battle gaming. Wednesday practice/sparring sessions have been seeing 8 plus fighters as well. This is an excellent time to work on individual fighting skills. I didn’t make it out, but the Olympics, one of the first camping events of the year, sounded like it went pretty well with over 300 participants despite the buckets of rain.
There are a couple things I would like to challenge everyone to this spring.
1st, if you haven’t re-read the Dagorhir Manual of Arms (rules) this year, please do so.
www.dagorhir.com/dagorhir/Rules.htm
This is a fast pace game that you play. You owe it to yourself to know the rules and to keep the game flowing smoothly for everyone. It is also helpful when explaining the game to a friend or people that stop by the park and ask questions. Knowing this information can help you recruit more players. And who doesn’t want a few more bodies on the field to beat on or hide behind?
Each year at the Ragnarok War Council (RWC), new rules and rule edits are voted on. Those rule changes go into effect at the following Ragnarok event, giving people a year to get accustomed to them. With that bit of fluidity to the rules, it is good for even those that have been playing for years to refresh their knowledge of the rule system. People are often surprised by one or two things that they didn’t know or that had changed since the last time they looked.
The 2nd challenge is for everyone to up their garb situation, even just one notch. Our chapter is fairly lenient with this, but that is no reason to ignore your garb. Garbing up is part of the game (see challenge 1, it's in the rules). We’re trying to get the feel of some medieval combat here, not bum fights. If you’ve been playing for more than a month or two, it is time to be picking out a tunic style that you like and figuring out how you can make/acquire it. If you’ve been playing for over a year and are only rocking the sleeveless t-shirt, it is well past time. If you can’t put a belt on over your shirt and have it remain tucked in through a day of fighting, it’s probably too short to resemble a tunic (unless you are rocking a sweet vest, then carry on). All of us are representing the game as well as our chapter.
I applaud the new players that have already put needle to cloth and made their first tunics and pants. Your effort is appreciated, and shows that you are willing to invest yourself into the game. If you want, you will find that there is a lot more to the game and the people who play it than just meeting up for a few hours each weekend to hit each other. If you are already rocking a tunic, maybe it is time to make a second one or add a few accessories. The little things can really make your garb look good. Adding a belt and pouch to a solid color bedsheet tunic is a simple way to up the bar. If people are planning to attend overnight events, it makes sense to have a change of garb anyway.
If anyone needs some help or wants to bounce some ideas around, let me know. In the last year, I've started sewing up my own garb. There are a handful of people that regularly attend practice that know their way around a sewing machine and can help point you in the right direction for some basic stuff or even offer their sewing services, just ask. The internet has a plethora of tunic and pants patterns if you don’t want to spend the money on store bought ones. Check out www.dagorhir.com/gear/garb.php for some fairly simple tunic instructions.
And finally, as we head into the summer months, I would also like to caution everyone about being ready for the weather. Bring water, bring sunscreen, and take a break if you need to. It is much better to sit out for twenty minutes then to get hauled off the field for the rest of the day.
With that, I bid everyone a good day and look forward to the next round of Dagohir Battle Games.
Regards,
Duke
