Pattern can help or make sewing a real pain in the butt. Much like blueprints, if you don't know the lingo, they can make things tougher than it needs to be. If you do want to pick some up, make sure you get them on sale. Once a month or so, either Joanns or Hancock has patters on sale for $1.99 or so. Don't pay more than a few dollars for them. Definitely practice too, if you haven't sewn much. A couple bucks for a bedsheet or fabric from Goodwill or Salvation Army is good for some starter fabric. On the www.dagorhir.com website there should be a How-To section with a couple tutorials on making tunics. I've used them before with fairly good results. Make sure to leave a little extra room in the armpits. That's where I blow mine out the most.

Thank you for the tips, I shall keep them in mind. But that still leaves the question of if the look alright.

Depending on the pattern, most look just fine. The Jack Sparrow pirate look and the renaissance or musketeer look are just a hair too modern for the feel that Dagorhir tries to go for, but some people pull it off well, and few complain. But any medieval peasant, knight, viking, foot soldier look works great. I know there are some patterns that would work for that.
The generic viking looking tunic (long or short sleeve) is the mainstay of the Dag population. Just make sure it goes down to mid thigh or a bit longer and you will fit right in. They are pretty simple to make, and even if you want to get fancier, it is always good to have a back up tunic or two, especially if you get into the weekend camping events.

It works. Sorry, I didn't click on it.
The outfit looks a little too much like a Jedi or martial artist gi.
But, with a different belt the D pattern could definitely work.
The cloak would be awesome for hanging out or for larger events with more time between the fighting, but I wouldn't recommend it for the battlefield.
Long or billowy clothing can become a tripping/tangling hazard to yourself or at least restrict your movement when you get legged and such. It always stinks when you see a good opening and go for it only to pull up short because you are standing on your own clothes.
