Personally I have a pair of New Balance walking shoes, granted with the giant N on the side it's not very "authentic" but it lasts a long ass time, and with garb half the time the N is hidden. But it's brown, durable, comfy. www.nbwebexpress.com/newbalanceMW977GT.htm

Generally your best bet would be a pair of "combat" boots from GI Joes or other Military Surplus store. They are generally comfy, water proof, have great ankle support and fit in fine on ANY dag event field. Neutral colored hiking boots work also.
I generally wear either my Combat Boots, or a pair of black, plain tennis shoes. THe tennies work fine as long as they arent GLAREINGLY obvious. Many, many, many event runners realize that period footwear is generally the most expensive and difficult garb to aquire. So they turn the proverbial blind eye as long as they arent white and neon green Nikes.
