Hail folk of the Northern Steppes,
I was redirected here with this post by LOD, so I'll just repost here.
I'm Loto of Middle Earth. In case you don't know, Middle Earth is around Danville, IL. However, Middle Earth isn't the issue at hand today.
I attend Goshen College, in Goshen, Indiana about an hr and 1/2 drive from Ft. Wayne. There is a small number of us here that are getting ready to start up a group at the college next year. We currently have 15-20 people interested. As it stands I'm the only experienced member, everyone else will be a fresh start.
We're looking for advice on getting things setup and getting a group started. I registered on the Dag message board, but for some reason still haven't gotten admin approval. We were discussing having group events planned if any local units are interested. I know just about everyone in our unit needs the chance to fight against more experienced fighters. I've been giving sword and board, greatsword, and spear fighting lessons to everyone interested. Almost everyone's garb will be fairly minimal to start off with. Mine needs updated as it is, since it's been a year or so since I've done this. Costuming advice is always welcome, as is weapon construction, etc etc.
We've found that there is another fairly new group that is an hr and 1/2 drive away from us, in the opposite direction of your unit. If at some point any group is interested we would be willing to serve as a middle point for any local groups to get together.

Im SURE many of us would be interested! We have a very good group of people in the Steppes... We range from the Legandary Bishop and Militis, Warlords of the LoD, to new fighters as of last weekend! I love traveling and meeting new players.
When do you guys gather over there? I might just pop over and surprise you!

^^: Like I said, we're just now getting ready to start it up. We're planning on starting up next school year, since this is a mostly college student group. Currently we don't have a practice time, just because we're focusing more on getting things started such as working on our group crest, finalizing sword and weapon designs, shields, garb etc etc.
Next year we're going to apply for college club status and hopefully get funding, then we'll focus on things like recruiting and setting up practice time. So, at the very least, it'll be around next august when we start up.
However we have been just doing some smaller fights on campus. I would say you could join us anytime you wanted, but the semester is about over and I'm going to be gone over the weekend.
I know alot of the people we have that are saying they'll join up as soon a we get it started have latched on to this almost rabidly. Several of our members just saw the few of us starting guys and then jumped right in by going and researching it online, buying materials for weapons and stuff and then coming to us for how to make things.
We've got alot left to do though. Our master semester is working on tabards and a penent, while I've been working on weapons, shields and giving fighting lessons since I'm the only real experienced member. We've still got to work on details about getting it started as a campus club and getting registered as a unit/chapter with Dagorhir, which so far has just ignored us.

Well, it's good to hear that there are even more people in the area interested in Dag. If any of your can ever make it up here, I'm sure we'd be more than happy to have you at a practice.

Kon'nitiha and youkoso Loto-san!
It will be an honor to assist you and your fledgling group in any way we can, I am to be sure (being our chapter was in much the similar situation not very long ago). I am also most certain that we would love to enjoy your company for our event -- which I believe is being planned for August?
I digress. It is good to see another young group beginning in the LBTL! There are many units here as you will find, and many alliances to be formed. Plenty of options for your new players who sound so eager to jump in as so many of us have found since our very first practice. :-)
The Yamabushi Mao Monastery welcomes you and extends to you the greetings of Shogun Tatsumura-dono and the clans of the Tou Fuu! Matane!

the idea of getting three units together for a day of practice is cool. I am all in for this when ever we can get it going

Hail to the Northern Steppes!
My name is Kallagh and I, too, am starting the initial process of creating a chapter/unit in the NW Elkhart/Mishawaka/SB area! I believe it may be advantageous for both of us to meet.
(Mods - please excuse this post if this violates any of the NS posting requirements, and edit/remove as you see fit.)

No worries there, Kallagh. You've actually put my mind at ease a bit. I've seen you on here every now and then, and I keep thinking, "Who the crap is this guy...?" Heh.
But again, a welcome to the both of you, and the rest of your respective groups. Hopefully we can all get together sometime, most likely at the event this summer. I look forward to it.

Hey Loto!
I actually deliver ice cream to the south side soda shop just about every friday. Good to see something is goin on there! I'm also trying to get a group started in Kendallville, IN (take 33 south to HW-6 and then about ½ hour east) Not to mention you have a group called Aethenu an hour West of you in Valporaso, IN that we've been trying to find a good middle ground in like warsaw to have a combo practice/mini-event.
We will def work somethin out!

Sounds like there is some definate potential for growth where you're at.

Awesome, awesome. The other leader of our group is going to join up here on the forums. He can work on getting things setup during the summer. He lives here in Goshen, however I live about 4 hrs south of here, plus my home unit is from Middle Earth.
Much of our group will probably only being doing this during the school year. But while that's going, we're eager to host things and have this as a middle ground for all the groups that wish to show up, specially if some of the other groups that are a little further away ever wish to show up for an event or something.
I've been reporting the news to the other core members, and we're all excited. Can't wait.

First off, to get my account moving, I'm the other Goshen group leader mentioned [above] and am very excited to see the buzz in here. To Kallagh: do you by some odd chance have anything to do with the Amtgard group that was meeting at Island Park 2 years ago? Either way, I'm interested to hear more about you and your people. Thank you to the Northern Steppes for such a warm and enthusiastic welcome! (And I look forward to killing you soon. )

Happy to put your mind at ease, Ragnar. I thought I had introduced myself shortly after admission to the boards. Looking back, however, I seem to have misplaced my manners. My apologies! A summer event would be greatly welcome.
Beschaulichkeit: I have seen the group of whom you speak. However, I have not participated in that particular community. Previously, I fought within the SCA. It would be a pleasure to speak with you and your companions as it's always good to hear about others with the same interests and goals.
I must concur with Beschaulichkeit. Many happy thanks to the community of Northern Steppes for the enthusiastic welcome!

Heh. No worries Kallagh. It's easy to be overcome with awe whilst basking in our presence.....
Like i said, it's always good to find more victims who are actually enthusiastic about things...*insert evil laugh here*
