Lot of people would say a lot of things either way.
Just make it as long as... so you can fit in your car and get it back out again.

I personally think anything under 8ft is a waste. Fury is really good with his short spear, but for many it wouldn't work.
Also... If you're going to make a spear... why not make it a glave. So you can strike and break shields too!

Personally, I think you should have red and spear proficiencies before even picking up a glaive. :-P Doesn't mean you can't make one though. :-)

Well... a glave IS a spear with a striking surface. It just gives you more playability and options. Trust my experiance, and Bishop's and many other who have been doing this a long time. My biggest advice to you would be stick with weapon and shield for a season or so to get the feeling of it. Then move onto a different style.

Make the spear, you want to get used to using your glave as a spear so you don't depend on the red parts.
You can always change it to a glave later, after you have proficiencies.
Reds can badly hurt people, and Rowan's rules forbid new players from using large weapons and archery for (X? amount of time).

I would say that I prefer Glaives over spears because of the added usefullness that you can bring with a glaive over just a spear.
Zing has a had a couple practices and fights safely and I sparred with him using a spear and he was fine. I would say hes fine to start learning how to use other weapons such as a glaive. I really dont think that people need to stick to weapon and shield for a season before moving on. I feel you need the basic idea of combat and what happens on the field before you try other combos and the best way to experience that is through weapon and shield. Use those basics and expand your horizons through what you feel would be fun and fits your abilities.
In terms of length/height...bandshoppe poles are 8 ft long and those are THE core for spears/glaives. Anything else when youre on a line youre not gonna have the reach of the other guys and then youre range is useless to your team
