[glow=purple,2,300]Part One
After the initial fallout of the first battles of the Great war between the Val’Sharen and the Val’Sarghess, many houses fled the war-torn city of Menzoberranzan to the far corners of the Underdark, outside the reach of the two warring clans. One such clan was the former 5th House of Menzoberranzan, House Baenrae. Under the battle-hardened direction of the Il’ Haress Quenthel Baenrae, the clan fled to the small Val’Sharen outpost of Chel'el'sussoloth, which watched over the Darklake, as well as the forces of the rival clan Barrison Del’Armgo which had been at odds with the Sharen for millennia.
Upon their arrival, the Baenrae met with light resistance, a few priestesses, and a small contingent of warriors. The opposition was swiftly and quietly dispatched. The Baenrae settled in, waiting quietly for the day that they could reclaim their nobility, but content for the time being as the 1st house of the new citadel of Chel'el'sussoloth.
20 Years have passed. Twilight is settling on the Great War, both sides having suffered massive casualties. Ched’Nasad had been reduced to ruins long ago, a barren shadow of its former glory, unfit for any civilized life. The fighting had spread to most of the Underdark, some small battles even pushing their way to the surface. In the 20 years since they conquered it, the Baenrae had turned Chel'el'sussoloth from a meager outpost into the largest, most prosperous city in all of the Underdark. House Baenrae had become even more powerful than both the Val’Sharen and the Val’Sarghess combined, at the height of their power. The Baenrae military was second to none, the power of their sorcerers dwarfing that of any other clan. But even though she had everything, Quenthel wanted more. The Drow had never focused on the surface, not since Sharess had sacrificed herself to help them escape from the Daemons of the Overworld. After weeks of consult and deliberation, Quenthel sent messages to 5 of her strongest and most trustworthy warriors: The Priestess Sylliphe Fae’en, The Archmage Pharaun Myzzrim, Weapons Master Ryld Argith, and her twin sons, Ragnar and Rylar Baenrae. They were to blaze a trail to the surface, scouting and reporting conditions back to Quenthel, who planned on creating at least one settlement on the surface, something that no Drow had ever done before.
The small group began preparing to leave immediately, strapping on their armour, sharpening their blades, gathering whatever small trinkets, wands, and scrolls they might need for spells, and finally, cloaking themselves in their piwafwi, they set out for the Rift of Dhal’Nadar, which housed the forbidden Gates of Faerdrimm: The doorway out of the Underdark, and into the Overworld….
